Dynamic Textbox Preset for After Effects

$7

Textboxes in After Effects are a relic from the past and need some help to keep up with modern design tools like Figma.

I created this preset to work around some of the limitations of the textbox.
This preset allows you to:

  • Precisely define the width of a textbox in pixels with a slider control (keyframeable)
  • Define the font size with a slider control (keyframeable)
  • Define the line height as a percentage of the font size (keyframeable)
  • Set the horizontal/vertical anchor points of the text box
  • Override the textbox's content with text from another layer. This makes it possible to edit the textbox contents through essential graphics. More information on that below*.

How to use

  1. Copy the preset file into the User Presets folder for your version of After Effects.
  2. Load After Effects and search for "Dynamic Textbox" in the Effects & Presets panel.
  3. Double-click "Dynamic Textbox" from the list and it will automatically create a new text layer with the preset applied.
Alternatively: drag and drop the preset onto an existing text layer, and it will replace the contents of the layer and add the preset.

Some other notes:

  • Do not change the width of the original textbox with the corner handles. Only use the slider to adjust the width.
  • If the textbox is very narrow, you might encounter an issue where the textbox gets cut off at the bottom. This can be fixed by manually extending the bottom of the textbox, with the text tool.
  • *Using the Dynamic Textbox with Essential Graphics:
    1. With the Dynamic Textbox already added, create a new text layer, and make it invisible.
    2. Use the "Text Override" dropdown on the textbox and select the new text layer.
    3. Finally, add the source text property from the new text layer to the Essential Graphics panel.
